On behalf of the Presas Family, GGM Ernesto Presas, and the Int’l Philippine Martial Arts Federation… Merry Christmas and Happy New year!

Thank you all for your cards, voicemail and email greetings. I’d like to respond with this year-end wrap-up of IPMAF and Kombatan activities. I just got off the phone with “GGM” last night…

Great Grandmaster Ernesto Presas…
extends his greetings to you all from the Philippines where he is currently at. Next year, he begins a series of seminars in Europe. He will be emailing me the details soon. When I receive the details, I will broadcast them and also post them on our website.

The 2007 IPMAF Hall of Fame & Training Camp held earlier this year at the Presas Beach Resort in Hinigaran, Negros, Philippines was a resounding success! It was well attended by some 60+ Kombatan practitioners from all over the world. Filming of his feature-length movie, The Legend of Escrima-Arnis (in which he invited everyone at the Camp to participate) was started and completed. Editing of the movie is done. Now it’s just a matter of stamping out the DVDs, distributing them and marketing them. All those who participated (and there were a lot of you!) should receive your own free copy. Please help in the distribution and marketing of the DVDs as the proceeds from the sale will be used to create another feature length movie for release in movie theaters prior to going to DVD..

Great Grandmaster Roberto Presas…
Was the Guest of Honor at his brother’s Training Camp and made quite an impression on those who were fortunate to talk with him and receive some training from him. GGM Roberto will be holding his own “Hinigaran Arnis de Mano Camp” in 2008 at the Presas Beach Resort, February 25 through March 7. Contact Guro Kurtis Goodwin (email: gurukurtis@hotmail.com tel: (503) 287-4265) up in Portland, Oregon.

Great Grandmaster Remy Presas…
Was transferred to a new, upgraded memorial plot, right beside his parent’s plot. This project was spearheaded and paid for by GGM Remy’s daughter, Maria Presas Butler. Per Dr. Remy Presas Jr, there are emails going around asking for donations. He requests that you not respond to these as GGM Remy’s family did not issue such a request. The memorial plot upgrade has already been completely paid for, primarily by GGM’s daughter, Maria.

Grandmasters Robert Castro & “War”Lito Concepcion…
It’s hard to mention one without mentioning the other. The two have been virtually inseparable this year, conducting joint seminars from the SF Bay Area on up to Canadian border. They even have a scene in our movie where they duel each other! GGM had promoted Eskabo Da’an founder Robert Castro to Lakan 9 (Grandmaster) and Warlito to Lakan 8 (Jr. Grandmaster) before the shooting but was so impressed with Lito’s performance in the duel that the very next day, GGM promoted Lito to Lakan 9 also! Lito now holds the record for the fastest rise (one day as Lakan 8) within the Kombatan ranks!

Earthquakes are common here in California but the most jolting news was California Chief Instructor GM Lito’s announcement that he was retiring and would be returning to his homeland in March. In preparation for the sale of his house in Vallejo, we will be moving his operations to my new school, Hayward Kombatan (the Kombatan division within Hayward Martial Arts in Hayward, CA) which will officially open January 2. As far as I’m concerned, my school is my Kuya’s (Older Brother’s) school until he leaves for the P.I. School address is 1024 B Street, Suite 1, Hayward, CA 94541. Although the address is “B Street”, it is actually inside the plaza between A and B Streets, between cross streets Foothill and Main.

GM Lito and I are calling on all Bay Area Lakans for a year-end meeting and 2008 strategy session this Saturday, December 26, 2007, beginning at 10 AM and ending whenever. We will all go to lunch at a restaurant next door. If we all chip in for lunch, it should cost no more than $10 per person. If you don’t have $10 for the lunch, please come any way and we will cover you.

Oh, I almost forgot: Jessie and George you will be pre-tested for Lakan (Black Belt, Instructorship) ranking this Saturday. Be at my (and now GM Lito’s) school at 10 AM sharp this Saturday. I figure you’ll receive this email by Friday, so you’ll have overnight to prepare (smile).

Everyone please attend and wear your uniform (even if you’re not Kombatan –if you’re interested in seeing what Kombatan is all about, please come). We will take a 2007 Year End group picture to hang at the new school site as well as for publication in PG Steven Dowd’s Filipino Martial Arts Digest (upcoming special edition).

Master Joey Paman…
Our very own award-winning writer is currently working on the FMAD Special Edition on IPMAF/Kombatan. If you are a Chief Instructor for a country (or a state in the U.S.), expect a call or email from him.

Grandmasters Tim Hartman & Rick Manglinong…
Are two others who were promoted to Grandmaster status at the IPMAF Camp this year. As you know, Rick has been with us for sometime now as IPMAF Chief Instructor for Nevada, working his way up through the ranks to reach Grandmaster status. Although invitations were issued to ALL of GGM Remy’s senior students and leaders, only Tim Hartman actually went to the Philippines for GGM Ernesto’s tribute to GGM Remy. Tim was recognized by the Presas Family for his dedication to Modern Arnis, was evaluated by GGM Ernesto and found to be well deserving of Grandmaster status. Well done, Tim; and welcome to the Federation!

Sr. Master Mike Bowers…
Accomplished quite a lot this year, helping GGM prep the Training Camp site and collaborating with GGM to create the new Kombatan Curriculum (all the way up to Black Belt, Lakan 2). For his invaluable help, GGM has appointed him IPMAF Chief Instructor for North America. The last I looked, North America covers Canada, the U.S., and Mexico.

The position of Chief Instructor for Canada is being rotated to recognize and honor our very capable instructors up there. Last year, our Chief Instructor for Canada was Master Bernie Lingasin; before him, it was Master Edwin Lao. This year the honor goes to Master Fidel Bonifacio.

In the U.S., it’s a different situation. Many years ago, upon Master Ed Farris’ retirement as IPMAF Chief Instructor for the U.S., GGM decided to do away with that position (because the USA is quite large) and instead have Chief Instructors for each state. This practice stays the same.

Btw, Mike is also to be congratulated for making history by being the first FMA school to hold a Qualifier Tournament for the United States Filipino Martial Arts Federation (USFMAF), a nonprofit organization in charge of setting up and running FMA tournament divisions for Disney’s Martial Arts Festivals. He then took his school to Orlando, Florida for the finals where they did extremely well, garnering several gold and silver medals.

New Headquarters…
Sr. Master Mike Bower’s school, formerly the Pacific Northwest HQ is now the newly created IPMAF North America Headquarters.

Master Fidel Bonifacio’s school is the new IPMAF Canada HQ.

I am still the IPMAF Sec Gen, per GGM’s wishes. Even though I am still “IPMAF USA HQ”, with the creation of a North American HQ, I suggest and encourage all USA State HQ’s to report up to the North American HQ with courtesy copy to me. Yearly membership dues (the financial backbone of our organization) are due January 1, 2008. Please send dues to IPMAF North Amerca HQ instead of to me. I view my role the same as it has always been: to assist GGM and individuals in the Federation, and to facilitate communication. Towards this end…

New Website…
The IPMAF Official Website (www.Presas.org) will have a new look, thanks to website designer and genius Bob Hubbard. I will soon be redirecting www.Presas.org to http://www.presasarnis.com/kombatan , but you can get to the new website right now by typing that address directly. Check it out! Note that there is a direct link to a public forum on Kombatan!

All IPMAF instructors please review the Schools and Clubs section of the website. If your contact information is not there or needs updating, or your school is not listed, please send desired info to Datu Hartman < email >

If you like the website design, Bob Hubbard offers web services to any IPMAF instructor at discount. Please contact him directly or by < email >.

Last but Not Least…
As I mentioned in the beginning of this post, I just got off the phone with GGM. Here’s the absolute latest news: Ernesto Presas Jr., Johan Skalberg, and Mike Bowers, you have been promoted to Lakan 8 effective December 25, 2007. Congratulations and Merry Christmas!

That’s it for now, folks. I can write only so much for one day. If there’s any information or seminar/event notices for your geographic area that you want posted, it is now easier to do so by submitting directly to our new webmaster or by direct posting on the Kombatan forum.

I wish you peace on earth and peace in the arts,
Alex (ander Bautista Bayot France)
IPMAF Secretary General (pronounced IPMAF Secret Hairy General (smile) ).
